For the second year in a row, the CIR Patient Care Fund Committee invested in an event to help increase public health by encouraging people to stop smoking. After the success of the 2008 Great American Smokeout, CIR and partner organizations like the American Cancer Society and the Miller School of Medicine came together to organize an even bigger event in 2009.
On November 19, the Jackson Memorial Hospital grounds hosted vendors and service providers who showcased healthy foods, fitness tips, and preventative medical services to the community.
Participants were able to buy healthy foods from greenmarket vendors and get counseling on some of the best ways to stay healthy and stop smoking.
The University of Miami’s Health Education Center, Jackson Health System, UHealth, and BeSmokeFree cosponsored the event. Both Jackson and the University of Miami campus are planning to be smoke-free in 2010.
