Jackson Housestaff Honored at 8th Annual Appreciation Day

In 2002, the Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners officially declared a Housestaff Appreciation Day, proclaiming that “Miami-Dade County takes great pride in saluting individuals and initiatives whose contributions serve to elevate the standard of life in our communities.”

Since that time, CIR has sponsored a Housestaff Appreciation Day at Jackson Memorial Hospital every year to honor residents for their contributions, with this year’s event falling on March 5, 2009. This year was the biggest yet, with more than 400 attendees, including residents, SEIU 1991 nurses, and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine medical students. The guests enjoyed a barbeque outside and a chance to relax with their colleagues.

“CIR was able to utilize the event to not only thank the housestaff officers (HSO), but also the CIR delegates who are working tirelessly on behalf of all HSOs in negotiating a contract in a tough economic environment,” said Dr. Janetta Dominic Cureton, CIR Florida Regional Vice President. “We were also able to ask residents to contact their members of Congress about President Obama's health care reform agenda, and to get engaged and involved.”
