CIR petitions for SCHIP at screenings of "Sicko"
Ensuring Kids' Health Needs Have An Audience
August 2007
The last two weeks of July, CIR members attended New York-area showings of Michael Moore’s movie “Sicko” to collect petition signatures in support of expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
SCHIP, a federal program which has successfully reduced the number of uninsured children in the US, is up for reconsideration by Congress. It is due to expire September 30, 2007. In chapters across the country, CIR is fighting to expand the SCHIP program, as a way to cover more of the approximately 9 million US children lacking health insurance.
In addition to petitioning for SCHIP, CIR members are watching the movie “Sicko” to begin a conversation in their hospitals about the need to ensure greater access to care, not only for children but for all Americans. Similar “Sicko” events took place in CIR chapters in Northern California, Florida, and Massachusetts.
Check out the mention of these CIR events on Michael Moore’s official “Sicko” website.
