CIR Members in Puerto Rico Continue the Struggle for Union Recognition and a Promised Raise

With press conferences held on September 8th and June 20th, 2008, CIR members in Puerto Rico are continuing to push for union recognition and a raise of $250 a month that was agreed to by the University of Puerto Rico and the Dean of the School of Medicine. Despite that commitment, the salary increase was not included in the University’s budget, which was sent to the legislature earlier this year.

Como es de conocimiento de todos, se supone que este año entraría en vigor el aumento en el estipendio que recibimos por los diferentes servicios médicos que brindamos. Desde principios de 2008, la Oficina de Educación Médica Graduada (OEMG) y el Decanato de Medicina del Recinto de Ciencias Médicas (RCM) solicitaron a la Administración Central de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) un aumento en su presupuesto para cubrir este aumento y otras partidas relacionadas a gastos de la oficina.

Getting Paid On Time In Puerto Rico

In May, 2007, housestaff working at three hospitals abruptly stopped receiving their paychecks without explanation. They continued caring for their patients, but after more than a month of working without pay, they felt compelled to take action. The residents decided to bring the issue to the public’s attention, by calling simultaneous press conferences on June 20 at Raúl Arnau University Hospital in Bayamón, and St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital in Ponce.
