"VOICES OF PHYSICIANS" CAMPAIGN REACHES 1,000 DOCTORS

Monday, May 04, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Voices of Physicians, a new online campaign that puts physicians’ concerns and priorities for health reform on a national map, reached a major milestone. Since last week’s launch, over 1,000 doctors nationwide have signed on to show their support for health care reform at the campaign’s Web site, www.voicesofphysicians.org.

The campaign was initiated by Doctors for America, and co-sponsored by the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU Healthcare and the National Physicians Alliance.

To celebrate the milestone, Dr. Vivek Murthy, President and Co-Founder of Doctors for America, was featured on a teleconference with John Podesta, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAPAF), and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus this morning.

Dr. Murthy discussed the challenges that spurred the formation of the group, saying, “What’s a key priority for us is that whatever plan is put forth really does improve access for patients and improve choice for patients.”

Dr. L. Toni Lewis, CIR National President, is available for comment by phone today and tomorrow. Contact CIR at 212-356-8100 x126 or tfoley@cirseiu.org to set up interviews.

Doctors for America is a grassroots organization of 11,000 doctors from all 50 states working to convey the ideas and experiences of physicians to achieve healthcare reform this year.

The Committee of Interns and Residents of SEIU Healthcare (CIR/SEIU) is the nation’s largest union of resident physicians with 13,000 members nationwide and is affiliated with SEIU Healthcare, which brings together more than one million members in the healthcare field.

The National Physicians Alliance is determined to keep health reform at the top of the political agenda and believes that health care should be guaranteed, of high quality, affordable and accessible for all.
