1,000+ University of Pennsylvania Doctors Urge Hospital Leaders to Re-Engage on Contract Agreement; Present Petition With 1,000 Signatures to CEO
Philadelphia, PA—The frontline resident and fellows at The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPenn), represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR/SEIU), will take action this Friday to bring attention to their nearly year-long fight for a first contract. Residents plan to present their petition signed by nearly 1,000 housestaff to demand that CEO Kevin Mahoney bargaining team return to the negotiating table to finalize a fair contract. They will be joined in solidarity by Representative Rick Krajewski.
Tomorrow’s event comes after a week of collective actions, which began on Tuesday with a gathering that was abruptly shut down by hospital security. The doctors had gathered in the publicly-accessible Pennsylvania Hospital courtyard to celebrate their union and enjoy burritos during their break when security guards arrived just minutes into the event. The guards proceeded to remove the CIR organizers who had brought the residents lunch.
Undeterred by the reaction from hospital management, UPenn doctors vowed to return Friday with dozens more of their coworkers.
At stake are agreements for a fair living wage for the doctors who work the longest hours and provide the majority of patient care at UPenn. Frustrated by the continued delays, the physicians have not had a bargaining session since July 23, they vow to continue holding actions inside and outside the hospital until Mahoney and negotiators approve a fair contract that prioritizes physician well-being and patient care.
Where: An action to present the petitions will be held at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. We will meet at 3400 Civic Center, Blvd., Philadelphia, 19104.
When: Friday, August 30 at 12:30 PM. The event will start on time and run for 20 minutes.
The frontline doctors continue to ensure UPenn’s Health System remains a world-class institution. They are fighting for a contract that will allow them to focus on delivering quality patient care to the communities they serve without burning out.
