UCSF Resident Physicians Hold Unity Break in UC System-Wide Week of Action, As Part of Largest Housestaff Contract Campaign in U.S. History

San Francisco, CA —Resident physicians and fellows at the University of California San Francisco, represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR-SEIU), will hold a Unity Break on Wednesday, November 16, to bring attention to their system-wide fight for fair contracts across all hospitals.

The Unity Break action is part of a series of actions across the UC system, where organizing efforts in recent years successfully secured representation for the over 5,000 UC hospital residents statewide. In bargaining with their local campuses since the Spring, the physicians are demanding the fair pay and benefits they need to deliver exceptional patient care without burning out–with the aim of setting minimum pay and benefits standards system-wide.

Who: The resident and fellow physicians at the University of California, San Francisco, represented by the Committee of Interns. They are one of five campuses statewide participating in the week of action.

What: UCSF Residents will hold a Unity Break action as part of a series of actions by unionized housestaff across the UC system next week. Despite serving on the frontlines of the state’s largest healthcare system, residents at UCSF are overworked and underpaid, while often carrying over $200,000 on average in student loan debt. They will speak out at the event about how their lack of adequate pay and benefits impacts their mental health and well-being and their ability to care for their patients.

Where: Mission Bay Conference Center Courtyard, 1675 Owens St, San Francisco, CA 94158

When: Wednesday, November 16, 2022, from 12:15 PM to 12:45 PM. The event will start on time and run for thirty minutes.

This series of actions comes amid a wave of resident physician organizing nationwide and at a time when the almost 50,000 UC employees affiliated with UAW are preparing for strike actions. UCSF residents stand in solidarity with their academic employee colleagues, whose actions are reflective of the larger underlying inequities that plague the UC-system and its treatment of its frontline medical and academic workers.

The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest house staff union in the United States. A local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing over 22,000 resident physicians and fellows. Our members are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities.
