After Thirteen-Months of Bargaining, Greater Lawrence Residents Secure First Contract

Lawrence, MA – Last week, after thirteen months of contentious negotiations, resident physicians at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center (GLFHC) celebrated a major victory when they ratified their groundbreaking first contract. Represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR/SEIU), the doctors say that their contract wins will make a concrete difference in their lives and their ability to provide the exceptional care their patients deserve.

“We entered negotiations to push GLFHC to make critically-needed improvements to our pay and working conditions. But this was always about more than just us,” said Dr. Alejandra Velez. “Resident physician working conditions are patient care conditions. With our new contract, we’re now better positioned to deliver the compassionate, community-centered care our patients deserve, without the added worry of how we’ll pay for rent or groceries.”

Along with a 20-23% salary increase over the term of the contract, the Merrimack Valley residents secured many of their core priorities. These include a 70-hour limit on duty hours for outpatient GLFHC rotations, a $4,000 chief differential, a $250 stipend for unplanned backup shifts and $2,500 per year for DE&I work within the residency program. The physicians will also receive a $1,500 signing bonus along with many more key benefits.

GLFHC residents serve as the primary care providers to Merrimack Valley’s largely immigrant and working class communities of color. Yet despite their critical role, the physicians had not received a pay increase since 2016. With many carrying over $250,000 in student loan debt and working more than 80 hours a week, a fair contract is essential to ensure the center can recruit and retain passionate physicians.

GLFHC residents joined CIR/SEIU in March 2022 and became the first group of residents to organize amid the ongoing housestaff unionization wave.

The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest housestaff union in the United States. A local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing over 30,000 resident physicians and fellows. Our members are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities.
