Across the country, CIR members are always ready to fight back when right-wing forces threaten patient care, public health, and physician well-being–and that is no different in this moment.
Unethically caving to pressure to enforce one of Donald Trump’s latest disturbing executive orders, NYU Langone in New York and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles recently sent out memos to staff saying that the facilities would halt gender-affirming care to patients under the age of 19. In both cities, healthcare workers and the community came together quickly to hold emergency rallies to protect care for trans youth.
Speaking to a large crowd outside NYU Langone, former CIR Secretary-Treasurer and current CIR Alternate Advisory Board Member Dr. Michael Zingman refused to mince words. “A system that profits off our labor is the same system that abandons trans and non-binary patients,” said Dr. Zingman. “They fear an organized workforce—one that fights for both provider rights and patient care.”
“By gutting this care, NYU is sending a message: They do not care about patient autonomy. They do not care about evidence-based medicine. And they do not care about the doctors they train.”
CIR Secretary Treasurer Dr. Mahima Iyengar had a similar message as she addressed the crowd in LA, at a rally that CIR helped organize overnight.
“For one of the largest and most famous children’s hospitals in the country to be pausing care … it sends the wrong message,” said Dr. Iyengar. “It’s sending a message that healthcare decisions are not being made by doctors right now. They’re being made by politicians instead.”
CIR will continue to stand strong against attacks on patient care, healthcare workers, and communities across the country.
