Immigrant physicians are at the heart of our union, and CIR continues to fight from every angle against the brutality of the Trump administration and ICE’s attacks on our communities.
Not only are members winning landmark protections through our contract fights, CIR also just won a lawsuit alongside our parent union, SEIU, when a judge in the U.S. District Court of Rhode Island vacated and declared unlawful four immigration policies this June.
The Trump administration policies froze benefit applications for nationals of travel ban countries, stopped asylum processing, initiated a re-review of previously approved immigration cases and used nationality as a significant negative factor in decisions. In the lawsuit, we argued that these policies violated federal immigration law, the U.S. Constitution, and the Administrative Procedure Act. The legal complaint included the compelling stories of several impacted CIR members.
CIR is hopeful that thousands of immigration applications put on hold because of these policies can now resume processing, allowing physicians and many others impacted to get back to their jobs, lives, and their irreplaceable roles in their communities.
