Statement from CIR/SEIU on the Mass Shooting in Monterey Park on January 21

|

We are utterly devastated after the horrific tragedy in Monterey Park, CA that has now claimed 11 lives. As doctors, we bear witness to the harrowing effects of gun violence on the bodies of our patients almost every day. And we did so again when CIR members at LAC+USC Medical Center received victims of the Monterey shooting. Gun violence is a serious threat to public health. From schools, night clubs, churches, and more, it has come to infiltrate our every space to devastate our communities. Nowhere else in the world are people facing death from the barrel of a gun as we do here in the U.S.

These deaths are preventable.

We call for immediate action and policy reform. We call on our legislators and elected officials to institute meaningful regulations to protect the safety and well-being of our people as well as measures that have proven to reduce gun violence. On what was supposed to be a time of joy and celebration for the Lunar New Year, we grieve deeply with the families of the victims and with the AAPI community after this loss. It is our hope that we come together and demand the change necessary to prevent these tragedies from continuing to occur.
